Literary evening dedicated to Sergei Yesenin

On May 24, 2023, the Faculty of Philological Sciences of the Pan-European University "Apeiron" celebrated the Day of Slavic Literacy and organized a literary evening dedicated to Sergei Yesenin, one of the greatest Russian and European poets of the first half of the 20th century.

Academician, Professor Dr. Branimir Čović held a tribute dedicated to Sergei Yesenin, accompanied by video clips and fragments of the feature film "Yesenin". He dedicated his speech, first of all, to the place and significance of Sergei Yesenin's works in Russia and in our country, and he illustrated his presentation with his original translations of the most important songs and poems. The professor pointed out the extraordinary interest in our region for the work of Sergei Yesenin, which has lasted without interruption for a hundred years.

And it all started way back in 1922 with translations of two poems, published in the magazine "Zenit", during the poet's lifetime, so that the year 1966 would be crowned with the publication of Sergej Yesenin's Sabraniḫ work in 5 volumes, and in the period from 1969 to 1973 his entire works were published in 6 books in the Serbo-Croatian language, in 4 editions with a circulation of 20 copies, which was not experienced by any poet before or after him.

Professor Čović particularly emphasized the great influence of Sergej Jesenin's poetry on the creation of many Yugoslav poets of the 20th century: among others, Gustav Krklec, Mika Antic, Stevan Raičković, Slobodan Marković Markoni. With their translations, all of them contributed to the popularization and reception of this great poet in our literature. During the tribute, students, postgraduates and doctoral students of the Department of Russian Language and Literature recited Yesenin's poems in the original and in translation.
